About this piece
A two-movement duo for cello and piano from 2007, one of several works Schmidt wrote for the cellist Shauna Rolston. Rolston and the composer recorded it for the Centrediscs album Icicles of Fire (2013). In his NewMusicBox review of the disc, Frank J. Oteri notes that in the dreamlike first movement a repeated cello figure accompanies a piano melody, reversing the usual roles, while the longer second movement is more forceful, with low piano strikes giving way to a modal melody passed between and shared by the two instruments.
