About this piece

Unaccompanied cello miniature of about three minutes (2022), marked 'Andante a placere'. A slow, introspective piece built from a rising low-string figure that returns several times, with freely timed passages (marked rubato), soft sustained high notes and frequent changes of metre. Sold as a digital score from the composer's website, which also posts a full perusal score and a MIDI realisation.

Technical overview

The cellist moves between low open-string figures and slow high notes, including a brief treble-clef passage up to B-flat above the A-string octave, with some glissandi, bowed tremolo and a few double stops. Constant metre changes (5/4, 4/4, 3/4, 6/4), rubato passages and a ppp-to-f dynamic range make the challenges mainly ones of control and timing.
