About this piece
A short, freely atonal Andante for cello and piano, dedicated 'à Laurence' and headed by the opening quatrain of Baudelaire's 'La Cloche fêlée' from Les Fleurs du mal, about bittersweet memories rising on winter nights to the sound of bells. The cello opens alone with a sweeping arpeggiated gesture into the treble register, and the piano later enters with flowing triplet figures beneath a cantabile theme.
