About this piece
A five-movement work for unaccompanied cello, about 11 minutes long, written in 2009 while Charlotte Bray was Composer-in-Residence with Birmingham Contemporary Music Group and revised in 2023. In her note the composer says the title reflects a wish to depict the cello through its range of tones and colours, and the movements (Touch, Unfold, To lose, To hold, to feel, Release) take their cue from Richard Serra's idea of a 'verb list' about touch. The second movement is played pizzicato throughout, and the last two movements run together. The composer's site notes that the piece is on ABRSM's FRSM (Fellowship) cello repertoire list.
