About this piece
A six-minute piece for unaccompanied cello written for Anssi Karttunen in memory of the composer Oliver Knussen, Charlotte Bray's mentor; Karttunen premiered it at the Aldeburgh Festival on 24 June 2022. Bray describes it as a musical letter to Knussen. The outer sections are quiet and meditative, with an owl-like fluttering figure, while a central section stays low on the instrument, fast and fragmented, before the opening material returns in a more singing form and the music sinks to the lowest register.
