About this piece
A piece of about seven and a half minutes for amplified cello and fixed audio, commissioned by Anssi Karttunen for the Aldeburgh Festival, where he premiered it in the Britten Studio on 24 June 2022. Zoë Martlew wrote it in memory of her longtime companion Oliver Knussen: a slow pizzicato cello line, built on a chord from one of his operas, moves through a collage of her phone recordings of Knussen's voice, his last rehearsal in the Britten Studio with Harrison Birtwistle, snippets of his music, and owl and whale calls. Performers need amplification and playback of the soundtrack.
