About this piece
An 11-minute piece for prepared, amplified solo cello, premiered by Ben Michaels at the Amadeus Centre, London, in January 2025 and recorded by him on the Delphian album 'For cello. By cellists' (2026). Zoë Martlew was inspired by a visit to Effigy Mounds in Iowa, a site of ancient animal-shaped earthworks; the title is the Lakota word for 'quiet'. The cellist plays the prepared instrument with percussive and vocal effects instead of conventional bowing, and the composer's note mentions fragments of Lakota song melodies. A Strad article on the album mentions clothes pegs clipped to the strings and scordatura.
