About this piece
A ten-minute piece for cello and fixed soundfile, written for cellist Madeleine Shapiro in recognition of her work for water conservation. Dorothy Hindman derived the entire electronic part from a five-second recording she made at a mangrove shoreline on Biscayne Bay: filtering the waves, wind and crickets yielded the pitches and rhythms of the cello part, and the recorded sounds are then transposed around the cello line. Craig Hultgren gave the premiere in Miami on 24 September 2011 and recorded it on Hindman's album Tightly Wound (innova, 2017).
