About this piece
A three-minute piece for unaccompanied cello written for Anssi Karttunen in memory of Oliver Knussen, premiered by Karttunen in Saint-Georges-en-Beauce, Quebec, on 15 June 2024. A Maestoso opening alternates bowed lines with pizzicato dyads and low notes, followed by a Misterioso section and a faster closing passage (Più mosso). The writing moves constantly between arco and pizzicato across the full range, with glissandi, fingered tremolos and quintuplet and triplet figures.
