About this piece
A concerto of about 25 minutes for cello and orchestra, co-commissioned by the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Staatstheater Darmstadt and the BBC. Its title refers to the agitato 'whisper cadenza' in Ligeti's Cello Concerto, and the composer describes it as built on contradictions, such as an agitated Andante and a 'presto dolcissimo', with the orchestra responding to and extending the soloist. The scoring includes prepared piano and unusual percussion (bubble wrap, small glass bottles), and at one point the cellist plays with a bamboo stick. Zlatomir Fung gave the premiere with the Dallas Symphony under Gemma New on 20 April 2023; the work won the Royal Philharmonic Society's 2025 Large-Scale Composition Award after its UK premiere with Fung and the BBC Philharmonic.
