About this piece
A duo for cello and cimbalom (the Hungarian concert hammered dulcimer) of about ten minutes, written in 2012 in memory of the composer's father, Sándor András Agócs (1932–2011). Its phrases are built from the intervals of the bells of Saint Elizabeth Cathedral in central Budapest, which he would have heard from his room in the neighbouring hospital during his last days. It was commissioned by New York cellist André Emelianoff, who encouraged Agócs to include the cimbalom as a link to her Hungarian roots, and was premiered by Paul Katz and Nicholas Tolle at New England Conservatory in 2013. In the composer's note the piece is described as "not mournful" but light and meditative.
