About this piece
A five-movement work of about 20 minutes for two solo cellos, cello choir and one percussionist, commissioned by the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble for a program on nature and climate change and premiered in San Francisco in January 2019. Each movement depicts part of the legend of Lemuria, a mythical continent said to have sunk into the Pacific; the movements are Pacific Motherland, Lemurian Traces, Seafarers, Sacred Mu and Lemurians in America. The percussionist plays a large set of instruments including bird whistles, ocean drum, rain stick, vibraphone and congas, and the cellists also chant and use vocal percussion. The cello choir was written for amateur players alongside the professional soloists, which makes the piece suited to community or student cello choirs with strong soloists.
