About this piece
A suite of seven short movements for cello and piano (about ten minutes in total) that turns the mathematical frieze groups, patterns that repeat infinitely along a line, into musical gestures in pitch and time. The title also refers to the decorative horizontal band along the top of a wall in architecture. It was commissioned by cellist Robert Jesselson and pianist Charles Fugo for the thirtieth anniversary of their duo, who recorded it on the 2012 album Carolina Cellobration. The movements (Molecular Presentation, Mosaic, Constructed Resonance, Identity, Lattice, Jump, Translation) each last between about one and two and a half minutes.
