About this piece
A six-minute duo for cello and classical guitar, commissioned by Catherine Schneider as a 60th-birthday present for her sister Lucienne. In his note for the recording, Brantley says the opening tune came to him in a dream and reminded him of a bebop or medieval take on the 'Ode to Joy'; the title ('Daughters of Elysium', from Schiller's text) recalls a walk down the Champs-Élysées with the two sisters. Boyd Meets Girl (Laura Metcalf, cello, and Rupert Boyd, guitar) made the premiere recording on their 2022 Sono Luminus album Songs of Love & Despair.
