About this piece
A 25-minute concerto in three movements played without a break, commissioned by cellist Inbal Segev with the Anchorage Symphony, Youngstown Symphony Society and Hudson Valley Philharmonic. Segev gave the premiere with the Anchorage Symphony in February 2013. Dorman describes it as a concerto for "a cello that forgot it was a cello": the soloist moves from exuberance to anxiety, looks back to its old identity in a cadenza-like slow movement, and finds a new voice in the finale. The orchestra includes a concertante group of piano, drum kit and double bass, and in the premiere the solo cello was amplified.
