About this piece

A meditative piece in 3/4 in which a warm, slow cello melody floats over a constant running figure in the piano. The composer intends the piano's moving line to stand for time passing, and it briefly quotes the Dies irae chant. It was first written for Turkish flutist Şefika Kutluer and belongs to a group of 2018 pieces, with The Dawn of Hope and Limoncello, that Elizondo wrote after a personal loss. Free versions are also available for unaccompanied cello and for cello with string orchestra (piano optional).

Technical overview

The cello plays long quarter-, half- and dotted-half-note phrases over the piano's steady motion, moving between bass and tenor clef up to about G#4. The writing passes through flat-heavy and sharp-heavy passages with many accidentals, so the main challenges are sustained bowing, smooth shifts and intonation.
