About this piece

A gentle, sunny piece in C major and 3/4 for cello and piano, dedicated to Mexican cellist Carlos Prieto. Elizondo wrote it in 2018 alongside The Dawn of Hope and Crepúsculos after losing someone close to him, and he describes it as the moment when one can smile again after a tragedy. It opens with a pizzicato introduction before the bowed melody begins. Free versions also exist for unaccompanied cello, two, three or four cellos, and cello with string orchestra.

Technical overview

After 16 bars of pizzicato, the cello plays a lyrical arco melody in two- and three-note slurs, moving between bass and tenor clef up to about A4. A middle section in sharper keys adds accidentals and wider shifts, and the piece ends on a long high note and a pizzicato chord.
