About this piece
A short piece for unaccompanied cello. In the composer's note it starts from a free treatment of the rhythms of a gangar, a traditional Norwegian dance, setting energetic dance sections against lyrical, dreamlike passages that recall a medieval viol. Its proportions, rhythms, phrasing and metronome marks are all derived from the intervals of four opening pitches (C-A-D-B), which the composer likens to light refracted through a prism.
