About this piece
A seven-movement sonata for unaccompanied cello, about 40 minutes long, dedicated to Daniel Gaisford, who premiered it in October 2003 at the Romaeuropa Festival in Rome and recorded it for Vanguard Classics. Much of the material grows from the dissonant two-voice chorale of the opening bars; movements III and VI are identical intermezzi, and the fifth movement is the long dramatic centre. In the composer's program note, Andrew Farach-Colton calls for "virtuoso technique and huge reserves of stamina".
