About this piece
Jalbert's Cello Sonata (2007) is a four-movement work of about 20 minutes, commissioned by David Finckel and Wu Han, who premiered it at the Aspen Music Festival on 25 June 2008. The long, slow first movement is the weightiest; it is followed by a scherzo in constant motion with shifting accents, a third movement in which the cello plays largely alone while the piano adds faint echoes, and a syncopated, dance-like Marcato finale that follows without a break. Finckel and Wu Han made the first recording.
