About this piece
Colored Field is a three-movement concerto for cello and large orchestra, about 40 minutes long. Kernis wrote it in 1994 as an English horn concerto for the San Francisco Symphony and recast the solo part for cello in 2000 for Truls Mørk, who premiered that version with the Minnesota Orchestra; the cello version won the 2002 Grawemeyer Award. The first movement grew out of the composer's 1989 visit to Auschwitz and Birkenau, and the movements are titled Colored Field, Pandora Dance and Hymns and Tablets.
