About this piece
Dreamsongs is a two-movement concerto for cello and chamber orchestra, about 22 minutes long, written for Joshua Roman, who premiered it with the ProMusica Chamber Orchestra under Timothy Russell in Columbus, Ohio, on 20 April 2013. The first movement, Floating Dreamsongs, is a mostly slow set of continuous variations that opens with three cellos; the second, Kora Song, draws on the West African kora and features long stretches of pizzicato and several cello cadenzas, some with conga drums. Roman later recorded it with the Royal Northern Sinfonia under Rebecca Miller.
