About this piece
Air is a lyrical single-movement piece, about 11 minutes long, that Kernis first wrote in 1995 for violinist Joshua Bell and dedicated to his wife, pianist Evelyne Luest. He made the cello version for Truls Mørk, who recorded it with the Minnesota Orchestra under Eiji Oue; it is available for cello and orchestra and for cello and piano. Two main themes, the second climbing steadily into the high register, frame a more intense middle section before returning in reverse order and ending quietly.
