About this piece
You [unfolding] is a piece for unaccompanied cello of about eight and a half minutes. Kilstofte wrote it for cellist Leslie Nash, and in his note the piece grew out of how the two of them came to know each other through letters; the publisher notes that it was commissioned by Theodore Antoniou and Boston's Alea III. It opens with slow, improvisatory 'expanding variations', each phrase elaborating the one before, moves to a brisk, syncopated centre built on widening intervals that drives to a climax, and ends with shortened returns of the opening material. Versions for solo violin and solo viola are also published.
