About this piece
Lilies (2011) is a piece of about 13 minutes for cello and piano, commissioned by the Jesselson/Fugo Duo (cellist Robert Jesselson and pianist Charles Fugo of the University of South Carolina) and dedicated to the memory of John McElyea. The composer's note calls it "a reflective and gentle vocalise" in three broad sections: a long, singing cello line over a slowly rocking piano bass, a more restless middle section, and a varied return of the opening that ends quietly. The duo recorded it on Carolina Cellobration: New Music for Cello, an album of works commissioned from South Carolina composers for the duo's 30th anniversary.
