About this piece
Sun-Wukong (2013) is a concerto-style work of about nine minutes for cello and orchestra, commissioned by the South Shore Orchestra of Valparaiso, Indiana, and named after the Monkey King of Chinese legend. In the composer's description the character mixes great strength, agility and magic with mischief, yet fights for what is right with ferocity and compassion. The cellist Joshua DeVries and conductor Troy Webdell gave the first performances in autumn 2013 and took the piece on the orchestra's eight-concert tour of China in December 2013 and January 2014.
