About this piece
Davide Verotta's Cello Sonata, subtitled 'Incantata', is an 18-minute sonata for unaccompanied cello in three movements following a fast–slow–fastest plan. Three main themes return and interweave across the movements, the most prominent being a dramatic flourish that sweeps across much of the cello's range. In the composer's note, 'incantata' means both enchanted and under a spell, and the piece is framed as a journey through an enchanted territory. It was commissioned by and dedicated to cellist Anne Lerner-Wright, who recorded it in San Francisco on 17 June 2021.
