About this piece
Tangle Eye is Dan Visconti's concerto for cello and orchestra, commissioned by the California Symphony for cellist Inbal Segev. Each of its three movements grows out of a folk song recorded by the folklorist Alan Lomax: 'Black is the Color', 'Shenandoah' and the prisoner's lament 'Tangle Eye Blues'. The finale is the only movement to quote its tune directly, building virtuosic passages on its opening four notes and having the soloist pluck and strum the cello like a guitar. Segev premiered it with the California Symphony under Donato Cabrera in Walnut Creek, California, on 7 May 2017.
