About this piece
A concert piece for unaccompanied cello commissioned by German cellist Benedict Klöckner as a companion to Bach's cello suites. Elizondo drew on Klöckner's playing of the Gigue from Bach's Sixth Suite, which the piece quotes, and on the castles and landscapes of the Rhineland; in his program note it follows a knight riding under the night sky, stopping now and then to take in the view. Klöckner premiered it at an outdoor evening concert at Schloss Burg Namedy on the Rhine. It also forms the first movement of Elizondo's four-movement suite Die Legende des edlen Ritters, and versions exist for two cellos, cello with violin or viola, and cello with orchestra.
