About this piece
An elegy for unaccompanied cello, about seven and a half minutes long, finished in August 2024 after the death of the composer's friend Tony Barton, a guitarist he had often performed with. In his note, Bromberg says he first thought of writing in the shred-guitar style the two of them used to trade solos in. He then wrote a reflection on losing a friend instead. Freely paced passages marked 'Not dragging' (crotchet = ca. 50) alternate with sections marked 'With a metered feel', and the piece ends with soft harmonic chords marked morendo.
