About this piece
Aleph is a three-movement piece for unaccompanied cello written for the cellist Paul Dwyer; the title is the name of the first letter of the alphabet in Farsi, the composer's native language. The movements are 'Lament', built over an open-string drone and using the composer's favoured effect of two- or three-voice textures on the single instrument; 'Ascent', a through-composed interlude; and 'Float', a calm close built from echoes of a short melodic line.
