About this piece
Knee-Deep is a six-minute piece for unaccompanied cello that Davide Verotta wrote in a single day in January 2014, adapting material from a larger work of his for piano, violin and percussion; the title refers to that write-as-fast-as-possible challenge. In his program note he says it came from a period of fascination with Shostakovich's music of the early 1950s and takes its form from Shostakovich's Concertino for Two Pianos: four distinct motives are worked out in an ABA shape, with a faster central section framed by an opening statement and its return. It was first performed on 2 February 2014, and the composer posts the score free on IMSLP.
