Highway Star Variations (2021) is a concerted piece for solo cello and an eleven-player band of flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, piano, violin, viola, electric bass and drum set. It is a set of variations on Deep Purple's hard-rock song 'Highway Star', credited in the score to the band's members Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Jon Lord and Ian Paice. The cello opens alone with the song's driving repeated-note riff at a fast rock tempo (quarter = 160) before the ensemble enters, and the solo part climbs into tenor and treble clef. It reflects Pritsker's practice of mixing rock and classical idioms.
