About this piece
Josef Labor (1842–1924) lost his sight to smallpox at the age of three and trained at Vienna's Institute for the Blind, going on to work in Brahms's Vienna as an organist, pianist and teacher whose piano pupils included Alma Schindler (later Mahler), Arnold Schoenberg and Paul Wittgenstein. He wrote this sonata in 1895, and Breitkopf & Härtel published it the following year; Universal Edition reissued it in 1912. It has four movements: an Allegro, a Scherzo (Allegro molto) in F major, a short Quasi andante in A minor, and an Allegro con spirito finale. Reviewing Floris Mijnders and Oliver Triendl's 2021 Capriccio recording, The Strad pointed to the easy-going opening melody, the slow movement's writing on the C string and the finale's fast passagework. The first edition, score with cello part, is free on IMSLP, and Edition Silvertrust sells a modern set of parts.
