About this piece
Louis Vierne (1870–1937), organist of Notre-Dame de Paris for almost four decades, was born with congenital cataracts and was nearly blind; an operation in childhood gave him limited sight, and poor vision shaped his whole working life. He wrote his only cello sonata in 1910 and dedicated it to Pablo Casals. Durand published it in 1911, and Fernand Pollain and Marguerite Long gave the premiere at the Salle Pleyel in Paris in February 1912. It has three movements: Poco lento – Allegro moderato, a slow Molto largamente in F-sharp minor, and Risoluto – Allegro molto. The Durand first edition, with a separate cello part, is free on IMSLP.
