About this piece

Superduets Book 1 is a set of original duets for absolute-beginner cellists by Mary Cohen, published by Faber (Book 2 is already in the catalogue). The pieces have picture titles such as 'A tiny Dinosaur chips its way out of an egg'. Each one starts with a clapping, tapping or stamping 'rhythm & beat rehearsal' before the duet, and has 'Fact File', 'Technical Tip' and 'Challenge' boxes. The book suits pupils who need movement and rhythm work before reading notes, and it can be combined with the matching violin book for mixed groups.

Technical overview

The duets use mostly open strings (D, G and A) with an occasional first-finger B, in simple crotchet and quaver rhythms in 4/4 and 3/4. Each piece first has a 'rhythm & beat rehearsal' in which one player taps, claps or stamps the rhythm while the other keeps the beat. It then has a short concert piece that uses pizzicato, arco and col legno, swaps between arco and pizz., and builds pp-to-f crescendos and accents.
