About this piece

Superstudies Book 2 is a set of 15 original studies for unaccompanied cello by Pat Legg, published by Faber in 1993 (Book 1 is already in the catalogue). Each study opens with a bilingual box naming its left-hand and right-hand focus, such as mini-shifts, harmonics or four types of pizzicato. The descriptive titles ('Tin Soldiers', 'Spanish Pizzicato', 'The Slinky Cat') give students a character to play. Several of the studies are set at Grades 5-7 in the RCM cello syllabus.

Technical overview

'Tin Soldiers' is a march of natural harmonics written in treble clef, with triplet rhythms in D major. 'Mini-shift Waltz' (3/4, E flat) practises small shifts from half to 4th position with forward and backward extensions under long slurs. 'Spanish Pizzicato' (6/8, C minor) uses four kinds of pizzicato, including left-hand pizz. and three- and four-note chords. 'The Slinky Cat' (3/4, F) uses slurred string crossings across arpeggio patterns in 1st, 2nd and 4th positions.
