Schumann wrote the three Fantasiestücke in February 1849 for clarinet and piano, and the first edition (Luckhardt, Kassel, 1849) offered violin or cello as alternatives to the clarinet, so the cello version has his approval. The pieces are played without a break and share their material: the tender 'Zart und mit Ausdruck', the lively 'Lebhaft, leicht', and the fiery 'Rasch und mit Feuer'. Single movements are set for cello exams: Trinity College London lists No. 1 at Grade 6 and No. 3 at Grade 8.
