About this piece
Doreen Carwithen, who studied cello as well as composition at the Royal Academy of Music, wrote her Sonatina for cello and piano in 1944; it was broadcast by the BBC in July 1946. It has three movements (Andante, Allegro, Andante con moto) and lasts about ten minutes. It was recorded by Lionel Handy and Jennifer Hughes for Lyrita's 'British Cello Works, Vol. 3' (2025). The William Alwyn Foundation now publishes it, paired with Alwyn's Three Negro Spirituals.
