About this piece
Dzonot is a four-movement cello concerto (2024, about 25 minutes) by the Mexican composer Gabriela Ortiz, premiered on 3 October 2024 by Alisa Weilerstein, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Gustavo Dudamel at Walt Disney Concert Hall. The title is the Mayan word behind 'cenote', and the movements ('Vertical Light', 'The Eye of the Jaguar', 'Jade', 'Toh's Flight') draw on the Yucatán's underground rivers and their endangered wildlife. The same performers recorded it for the LA Phil album 'Gabriela Ortiz: Yanga' (2025). The concerto won the GRAMMY for Best Contemporary Classical Composition at the 68th GRAMMY Awards in February 2026.
