About this piece
A single-movement Ballade in G minor for cello and orchestra by the Dutch composer and conductor Elisabeth Kuyper, written while she was the first woman in Max Bruch's composition masterclass in Berlin. Bruch conducted it in 1903, Kuyper herself conducted it in Stettin in 1909, and Simrock published it in 1911 with a cello-and-piano reduction, dedicated to the cellist Jacques van Lier. Raphaela Gromes recorded it with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin under Anna Rakitina on her 2025 album Fortissima.
