About this piece
One of Lili Boulanger's last works, from 1918, the year of her death at 24; Henle notes that the seriously ill composer dictated it to her sister Nadia, and that versions for piano trio, cello and piano, and orchestra came into being. The duo version is a short, highly expressive single movement, just under ten minutes in Ma's recording. Henle's forthcoming urtext (HN 1716, edited by cellist Clemens Krieger) is the first urtext of the duo version; the manuscript has a twenty-bar gap that Krieger filled from the other versions. Yo-Yo Ma and Kathryn Stott recorded the duo version on their 2024 album Merci.
