Fauré wrote his second cello sonata in 1921 when he was already severely deaf; he dedicated it to Charles Martin Loeffler. Gérard Hekking and Alfred Cortot gave the first performance at the Société nationale de musique on 13 May 1922, and Durand published it the same year. The central Andante reworks the Chant funèbre Fauré wrote in 1921 for the centenary of Napoleon's death. The outer movements are terse and contrapuntal, typical of his late style.
