About this piece
Rodrigo wrote this cello concerto in 1981, aged nearly 80 and blind since early childhood, after Julian Lloyd Webber asked him for a new work in 1979. Lloyd Webber gave the premiere with the London Philharmonic Orchestra under Jesús López Cobos at the Royal Festival Hall on 15 April 1982, where the finale had to be encored, and the same performers then recorded it for RCA. The orchestra is light, with xylophone and celesta, and the three movements are Allegretto, Andante nostalgico and Allegro scherzando.
