About this piece

The 'Ode to Joy' theme from the choral finale of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, which he finished in 1824, years after he had become profoundly deaf. This is Thomas Gregory's arrangement from Vamoosh Cello Book 1, a beginners' book with downloadable play-along tracks, and Trinity College London sets it for its Grade 1 cello exam. It gives a new cellist one of the most famous melodies in classical music, by a composer whose deafness is part of the story students already know.
