About this piece

Samuel Araya's cello-and-piano arrangement of 'Swing Boats' from The Old Fair, a set of fairground piano pieces published in London in 1921 by Hilda Dederich, a Matthay-trained pianist and teacher who later broadcast to children as 'Aunt Hilda' on the BBC's Children's Hour. The slow, rocking 3/4 melody suits a student learning to sustain long bows and make a first shift.

Technical overview

A gentle Andante in G major and 3/4 written almost entirely in half and dotted-half notes, rising from D below middle C to E above it. The high notes need a shift up the A string, and long tied notes and crescendo-diminuendo hairpins train sustained bows.
