About this piece

A romance in B-flat major for cello and piano, dedicated to Dr Hermann Schaper and published by Breitkopf & Härtel in 1879 as the companion to Bronsart's Notturno, Op. 13 and Elegie, Op. 14. A calm Lento melody gives way to darker episodes in A-flat major and B-flat minor and a passionate Allegro moderato, before a tranquil return and a quiet close in double stops. Bronsart, of Swedish parentage, studied with Liszt and built her career in Germany as a pianist and composer.

Technical overview

A Lento in B-flat major (91 bars) with sections in A-flat major and B-flat minor, a short Allegro moderato marked appassionato, and a Più animato before the opening returns. The cello part moves between bass, tenor and treble clef and reaches F5, with several thumb-position signs. There are semiquaver runs, turns, grace notes and triplets, and the coda has double stops in sixths and thirds. Frequent ritardandos and a tempo markings ask for flexible, expressive timing.
