About this piece

Samuel Araya's cello-and-piano arrangement of 'The Roundabout' from The Old Fair, a set of fairground piano pieces by Hilda Dederich published in London by the Anglo-French Music Co. in 1921. The jaunty 6/8 tune evokes a fairground carousel and pairs naturally with 'Swing Boats' from the same set. Dederich was a Matthay-trained English pianist, composer and teacher.

Technical overview

A lively merry-go-round tune in E-flat major and 6/8, marked Allegro. Each phrase starts with a quick E-flat-D-E-flat figure high on the A string (3rd position) before falling back into first position. The flat key needs low first fingers, and the piece contrasts mf, p and f phrases. No bowings are marked in the bars seen, so the teacher can choose them.
