About this piece
Mikroczellos is a set of six short concert etudes for solo cello, played entirely without the bow. Chris Neiner wrote them in 2021 with the help of cellist Eleanor Lee, who tested ideas and techniques with him over seven months and gave the premiere on October 19, 2021, in Lyndhurst, Ohio. Each piece explores a different way to "pluck, strum, or strike the strings"[1], from pizzicato with vibrato and fast strums to sul tasto and dampened notes, often in changing meters. Neiner calls the set "a modern set of concert etudes that challenge cellists to rediscover the possibilities of their instrument."[1]
