About this piece
Cantilena is a single-movement work for cello octet, commissioned by Richard Aaron for the Cleveland Institute of Music Cello Ensemble and premiered there in 1999. The composer describes it as "a darkly lyrical octet that plays with cross rhythms, metric modulation, and many moods and colors," with a "languid, melancholy, and somewhat boozy opening" that "allows each of the eight cellists an individual voice."[1] It is in the repertoire of the Tarab Cello Ensemble in Rochester and was recorded in 2024 by the Erie Coast Cellists.
